What is the difference between Souvla and Souvlaki?
Cyprus is known for its delicious and flavourful traditional dishes, and two of the most popular are souvlaki and souvla. Both are traditional Cypriot dishes, but they are prepared and served in different ways.
Souvlaki is a small skewered and grilled meat, typically pork, chicken, or ocassionally lamb.
It is typically made with small, marinated pieces of meat that are skewered and grilled over charcoal on a Rotisserie Cyprus BBQ, giving them a distinct smokey flavour.
Souvlaki is a popular street food in Cyprus and is often served in a pitta served with a garnish of tomato, onion, parsley and Tahini sauce. It is a smaller than souvla, handheld, and can be eaten on the go.
It may also come with a few chips and you can add in a couple of Sheftalia for the perfect combination.
Souvla, on the other hand, is a larger and more substantial dish that is typically served in traditional Cypriot tavernas or family gatherings.
It is made with larger cuts of meat, such as pork shoulder, chicken, or leg of lamb, that are marinated and skewered before being cooked on a Cyprus Rotisserie BBQ over charcoal.
Both souvlaki and souvla are delicious and traditional Cypriot dishes, but they are prepared and served in different ways and have different portion sizes. If you're looking for a quick and easy street food option, souvlaki is the perfect choice. But if you're looking for a more substantial and sit-down meal, souvla is the way to go. So, next time you're in Cyprus, be sure to try both of these delicious dishes and experience the flavors of traditional Cypriot cuisine.
